Phnom Penh City Tour
Breakfast at the hotel.
Begin your tour by visiting Wat Phnom, the center of Phnom Penh that gives the city its name. At 27 meters above sea level, it is the highest point in the area. As the town gradually grew around it, the settlement became known as Phnom Penh, the hill of Penh. It is the zero point of the city. Continue to visit Wat Unalom, a Buddhist monastery that serves as the headquarters for one of Cambodia's most revered Buddhist patriarchs. This pagoda includes a post-Angkorean stupa.
Next, visit the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, formerly a high school before 1975 and later an interrogation prison known as S-21 during the Khmer Rouge era. Now a genocide museum, it tells the tragic stories of thousands of innocent Cambodians tortured on its grounds. The museum exhibits haunting photographs and torture devices, providing a somber yet essential insight into Cambodia’s turbulent past. Lunch at a local restaurant (Khmer Sorin).
In the afternoon, visit the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, two fine examples of Khmer architecture. The Royal Palace, built in 1866 by the French for King Norodom, also houses the Silver Pagoda, named for its floor made up of 5,329 silver tiles. Finally, visit the National Museum, home to Khmer art and sculptures from various periods of Cambodian history. Dinner at a local restaurant.
